Local museums

 

The Jämsä area offers many fascinating local museums where you can go and learn about the life and everyday objects of people from the 16th through to the 20th century. The local museums are brimming with history, presenting the life of a peasant household of average means and their rural home, as well as the early stages of industrialisation. Come and see the local museums in Jämsä region and absorb yourself in the local tales of peasant life! In addition to the local museums in Jämsä region, you can also visit the Amuri Museum of Workers’ Housing in Tampere or the Old Courtyard in Jyväskylä. These new museums are also worth visiting and are conveniently located around a one hour’s drive away. The Himos-Jämsä museums are open primarily in summer time.

Pälämäki Local Museum

Pälämäki Local Museum tells the fascinating tale of life as a crofter in Jämsä of the 18th and 19th century. All the buildings were moved to Pälämäki at the beginning of the 1960s from all over the Suur-Jämsä region. Visit Pälämäki to see how Jämsä’s crofters made a living for themselves.

Aarresaari Local Museum

The buildings of Aarresaari will take you on a trip back in time, visiting the history of the region from the 16th century all the way up to the early decades of the 20th century. The buildings and the artefacts exhibited in them present the history of traditional farming and beginning of the Industrial Age. Head out on a voyage of discovery at Aarresaari!

Kuorevesi Local Museum

The Kuorevesi Local Museum is beautifully situated on the shore of Lake Kuorevesi. The museum presents the life and artefacts of farm life in the 19th and early 20th century. Come admire the idyllic homestead museum and its treasures from the past.

Längelmäki Local Museum

The Längelmäki Local Museum exhibits buildings and artefacts from the pre-industrial peasant farmer era. There are three buildings, a house, drying barn and granary on the Längelmäki Local Museum grounds. In the main building, you can see artefacts, kitchenware and tools from the era of peasant farmers.
