Ravines

In the Jämsänkoski region of Central Finland can be found a number of ravines that are rich in wildlife and plant species. So why not take a trip to admire these verdant nature sites?

Ravines are steep-sided spring channels that have been carved out by the flowing water. These thin channels were created during the cool phase of the ice age melting period, when the meltwater cut deep channels into the soft gravel at the edge of the ridge plateau.  The continual changing of the ravines can also be explained by ice age conditions.

The area’s vegetation is very diverse, as the pine-filled moorland can very quickly change to lush vegetation. Growing in and around the ravines can be found both uncommon plant species as well as a huge variety of different mosses. The lush stream channels provide a habitat for flying squirrels and birds. These gorges are indeed inhabited by many different birds, as the thickets provide protection and the rich vegetation also attracts insects.

The ravines are located to the south of the Jämsänkoski urban area, on the west bank of Jämsänjoki, between Koskikeskinen and Tuuralampi. Higher up to the north can be found Pikkuryöni ravine, and to the south of this there is Isoryöni ravine. To the south of Isoryöni, there are four less well known ravines. The cliff edges at Isoryöni are very soft, so it is best to view this ravine from the viewing platforms.
